From outrageous family adventures to quiet nights at the park, Highlands Ranch is nothing but fun all summer long
Ah, summer… The kids are out of school. The days are long and beautiful. And there’s no end of merry to make. Whether you’re looking for an unforgettable family getaway close to home, community events right in your backyard, or an easy escape to nature, we’ve got you covered.
Here, four fantastic ideas for summer fun in and around Highlands Ranch.
Race to Win
The Highlands Ranch Community Association Race Series will get you and the family out and keep you fit.
Starting with the Independence Day 5K — a family friendly event on July 4 that leads right into the community parade — and running into November, HRCA offers a number of great options.
The Kids Triathlon on August 4 is a great way to introduce the kids to races. The Wildcat Mountain Trail Race is for the more serious runner. And, of course, the HR MTB series consists of four races on four different courses.
Explore the Backcountry
Immediate access to an expanse of unspoiled nature is one of the great advantages to living in Highlands Ranch. And summer is the time to take full advantage of it.
The Backcountry Wilderness Area is a great escape just down the road. With 8,200 acres of open space, and myriad outdoor offerings, it’s like the summer camp of your dreams. Take the family horseback riding on any number of rides or camps, get your Robin Hood on at the archery range, enroll the kids in Camp Backcountry or the Nature Education Program. Or, go it your own and get out on the endless loops of singletrack for a hike or bike ride.
Catch a Concert

Outdoor music abounds throughout the summer. From local acts right here in the hood to major national tours, nothing beats a summer evening show with some friends.
The Highlands Ranch Summer Concert Series continues through July with Groove N Motion, Fab 4 and more performing at Highland Heritage Regional Park. Hudson Gardens features your favorite bands, from decades past, in a pretty and intimate venue. And Fiddler’s Green brings in top billing national acts, like Dave Matthews and Keith Urban.
Pick your shows, pack the cooler, and get your party on at one of these local venues this summer.
Get Outta Town

The Royal Gorge is a wonder of nature, just two hours south from Highlands Ranch. Walk the highest suspension bridge in North America, zip line across the canyon 1,000 above the river, or swing above the gorge on the Skycoaster … If you dare.
Or, get a view from the bottom of the canyon. Go whitewater rafting with Royal Gorge Rafting, with both family and extreme day trips. For the more tame at heart, take a scenic ride in an open-top train.
It’s a Colorado landmark, and an easy family escape.
