Some people prefer to color inside the lines, and some can’t help but wander outside of them. This year’s Pantone Color of the Year, Ultra Violet, inspires us to color as if there are no lines at all. This dazzling color encourages individuality of style and energizes a space. It speaks of impressive confidence and artistic expression. Like the mystical qualities of the cosmos, it imagines and cultivates a vision of the future.

Pantone’s bold choice is a welcome break from the pastels and muted neutrals of previous years. Paired with other bold tones like bright yellows and oranges on accent pieces, Ultra Violet brings a once drab room back to life. Used more subtly—a stone tabletop or area rug, for example—the color infuses a space with a rich sense of tradition and luxury. Whether it’s highlighting a feature wall or in the tuft of a pillow, Ultra Violet makes a statement.
